Quantifying the eddy diffusivity of the Southern Ocean II: spatial variability and the role of the mean flow
نویسندگان
چکیده
A diagnostic framework is presented, based on the Nakamura effective diffusivity, to investigate the regional variation in eddy diffusivity. Comparison of three different diffusivity calculations enables the effects of locally enhanced tracer diffusion to be distinguished from the streamwise average and the distinction between locally generated complexity in the tracer structure and between that advected into a particular domain. The results highlight the important role the mean flow plays in determining the eddy diffusivity. The effective diffusivity is not simply related to the eddy kinetic energy: in the presence of a strong mean flow the eddy diffusivity can be suppressed even in the presence of moderately strong eddy activity, conversely in a region of weak mean flow the eddy diffusivity can be enhanced even in the presence of only weak eddy activity. This casts doubt on the ability of paramterizations based solely on the eddy kinetic energy to adequately characterize the eddy diffusivity in regions of strongly varying mean flow such as the Southern Ocean. The results are, however, consistent with the eddy transport and mixing variability predicted by potential vorticity based arguments. JULY 2008 SHUCKBURGH ET Al. 3

It also enables the distinction to be made between locally generated complexity in the tracer s...
متن کاملQuantifying the eddy diffusivity of the Southern Ocean I: temporal variability
The robustness of Nakamura’s effective diffusivity diagnostic for quantifying eddy diffusivities of tracers in a streamwise-average framework is carefully examined in an oceanographic context and the limits of its applicability are detailed. The nearsurface Southern Ocean geostrophic flow, obtained from altimetric observations, is chosen for particular examination. The temporal variability of t...

متن کاملA New Model for Prediction of Heat Eddy Diffusivity in Pipe Expansion Turbulent Flows
A new model to calculate heat eddy diffusivity in separating and reattaching flows based on modification of constant Prt is proposed. This modification is made using an empirical correlation between maximum Nusselt number and entrance Reynolds number. The model includes both the simplicity of Prt=0.9 assumption and the accuracy of two-equation heat-transfer models. Furthermore, an appropriate l...
متن کاملEstimates and Implications of Surface Eddy Diffusivity in the Southern Ocean Derived from Tracer Transport
Near-surface “effective diffusivities” associated with geostrophic eddies in the Southern Ocean are estimated by numerically monitoring the lengthening of idealized tracer contours as they are strained by surface geostrophic flow observed by satellite altimetry. The resulting surface diffusivities show considerable spatial variability and are large (2000 m s ) on the equatorward flank of the An...
